1 dies, 25 injured in Waiyaki Way accident

One person died while 25 others were seriously injured after a lorry crashed along Waiyaki Highway in Westlands, Nairobi.

The lorry was ferrying 50 casual workers towards Kangemi on March 4, 2024 evening when the accident occurred.

The accident occurred a few meters away from the Westlands Expressway exit.

The unfortunate accident left victims nursing severe injuries as they were rushed to various hospitals in the city.

Local authorities stated that close to five ambulances rushed to the scene to aid in taking the victims to hospital.

According to the police report, the lorry driver lost control as the lorry veered off, hitting a concrete wall that acts as a barrier of the main highway.

The incident however caused traffic jam for several hours on both sides of the road as the rescue exercise was ongoing.

According to one of the survivors of the accident, they had boarded the lorry due to lack of money to pay as fare in matatus.

He added that lorries along Waiyaki Way were offering them free transport after work in the evening.

Further reports show that the lorry was headed to Kangemi.

Meanwhile, residents have blamed traffic police officers for not taking action people who use lorries as a means of transport.

Cases of people boarding and hanging on lorries have been rampant along the busy highway as residents urge the police to take action.
