Ten (10) people have been confirmed dead in a Monday evening accident at Salama, Nairobi-Mombasa Highway after five vehicles collided.
According to a police report filed at Salama Traffic Base, the fatal accident occurred around 8:30pm at Mlima Kiu area in Salama, Makueni County.
It all began when an Isuzu FSR lorry under registration KBC 564M, which was enroute to Mombasa from Nairobi, made an abrupt right turn at Salama junction.
“The driver failed to keep to its proper traffic lane and also turned right abruptly and without due care and attention hence collided head on with motor vehicle Reg number.
KDK 259U Toyota Hiace matatu of Spanish Sacco,” read part of the police report.
The impact made the Spanish Sacco matatu collide with another matatu belonging to Naekana Sacco under registration KCW 510C, pushing it to brush off with a trailer under registration KDD 028Y/ZG6996.
A Toyota saloon KCJ 838K was also grazed by the tail of the lorry which made the wrong turn.
Following the horrific crash, four people died instantly, according to the police report.
Sultan Hamud Medical Superintendent Dr Jane Jane Mwende confirmed early Tuesday morning that 10 people from the different vehicles had died. Two out of the ten people were children.
Police have so far transferred the 10 bodies to Sultan Hamud sub-County Hospital as other responders attend to trapped victims and the wreckage which caused traffic snarlup along the busy highway.
