Ten people perished in a road accident involving a matatu and a lorry at Soy along the Eldoret-Kitale road on Friday January 3, 2025.

According to the Soy base commander, the head-on collision between the two vehicles occurred on Friday at about 09.10am.

“It occurred today 03/01/2025 at around 0910hrs at Chemoseti area along Eldoret – Kitale road involving vehicle reg. no. KBZ 135X Isuzu frr driven by unknown driver and motor vehicle reg. no. KCH  468D Toyota Hiace Great Rift Shuttle driven by Stephen Tibi. 

“It happened that the unknown driver of the said Isuzu frr was driving from Eldoret heading towards Kitale general and on reaching at the location of the accident failed to keep to his proper traffic lane thus collided with on-coming motor vehicle reg. KCH 468D Toyota Hiace (Great Rift Shuttle) which was carrying 11 adult passengers and 4 juvenile passengers,” read part of the police report.

As a result, the driver of the matatu and 8 unknown passengers died on the spot, while 1 passenger was pronounced dead on arrival at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret.

Meanwhile, bodies of the deceased were moved to MTRH mortuary pending identification and post mortem.

The driver of the Isuzu frr escaped immediately after the accident.

“We call upon the driver to report with immediate effect to the nearest police station for onward legal action,” read part of the police report.

However, other victims of the accident were rushed to various hospitals for medical attention as police launched a hunt for the driver.

Both vehicles were extensively damaged but they were towed to Soy Police station as police continue with investigations into the matter.
