Ten people died and seven others were seriously injured after a trailer rammed into a matatu in Mai Mahiu town, Nakuru County.
The accident was confirmed by Naivasha OCPD Samuel Kirui, who said nine people died on spot while one succumbed on the way to Kijabe hospital.
According to a police report, the trailer lost control due to brakes failure, just a few metres from the town, before ramming a MUNA Sacco matatu from behind.
“This occurred today, the 8th June 2024. at about 1210hrs at Vip area along Mai Mahiu -Nairobi road, unknown driver driving motor vehicle trailer from Nairobi heading towards Mai Mahiu general direction and on reaching at the location of the accident he lost control of the vehicle and rammed into the rear of a PSV matatu Reg No. KCS 387P Toyota Hiace c/o Muna sacco, hit another trailer of make Mercedes/Benz which was parked off the road and lastly hit another motor vehicle Mercedes Benz,” read part of the police report.
Police added that 5 female adults, 3 male adults and 1 young girl died on spot during the accident.
Meanwhile, 3 male adults and 5 female adults who were seriously injured, were rushed to Auckland hospital before they were referred to Kijabe Hospital where they were admitted in critical condition.
Unfortunately, one accident survivor succumbed while undergoing treatment.
All motor vehicles involved in the accident were towed to the police station awaiting inspection.
In addition, the deceased were taken to Umme funeral home awaiting identification and postmortem.
