About 1,048 flood victims from Longeiwan, Sintaan, and Eldume villages in Baringo South have been successfully evacuated to safety in the last two days, according to the Kenya Red Cross.
In a statement on Monday May 6, 2024, the Kenya Red Cross stated that about 1,048 have been rescued in the affected villages in Baringo South.
“This was made possible with support from the National and County Government, community members, Savage Wilderness and the Kenya Red Cross,” Kenya Red Cross noted in a statement posted on X.
However, the humanitarian agency added that there are still other people marooned in Sintaan, Baringo South, and preparations are underway to evacuate them as well.
Meanwhile, the government of Kenya on Sunday May 5, 2024 outlined some of the measures it has put in place to help flood victims in the country.
In the report, Interior cabinet secretary Kithure Kindiki stated that the government has established 138 camps in 18 counties that are hosting 62,061 floods victims.
Kindiki further noted that approximately 227, 238 people have been affected by the heavy rains, adding that 1,967 schools have been affected by the floods.
Additionally, 237 people have lost their lives, 164 people have been injured while 72 are missing as a result of heavy rains and floods.
A total of 42,526 households have been displaced affecting approximately 212,630 people.
