Twelve youths have been arrested following a failed attempt to storm Bondo Police Station during anti-government protests on Tuesday, July 2.
The incident occurred as demonstrators gathered in the town center around midday, with some individuals attempting to erect roadblocks.
According to Siaya County Police Commander Cleti Kimaiyo, the situation escalated at approximately 2 pm when a small group of protesters began hurling stones at the police station.
“The protesters were relentless in their assault on the station, continuously pelting it with stones and other projectiles,” Kimaiyo stated.
In response to the violent turn of events, an enhanced anti-riot team led by the county police commander swiftly intervened.
During the operation, the police managed to apprehend 12 suspects who were directly involved in the attack on the police station.
The anti-riot team maintained a strong presence in the area until 9:30 pm, working tirelessly to pacify the town and disperse any remaining pockets of protesters.
The DCI reported that the goons were armed with crude weapons including stones and catapults, slings, petrol bombs and other concealed weapons, seriously injuring several police officers and maliciously destroying property.
Most of the other officers and members of the public who were also injured in the attack have been discharged from hospital. However, one of the police officers whose life was saved by Good Samaritans is admitted in critical condition at a hospital in Bondo.
The arrested suspects are set to face charges in court on Friday, July 5.
