19 Migori County employees resign over fake academic certificates

Nineteen county government employees in Migori have resigned amid a crackdown on staff with fake academic credentials.

Migori County Secretary Oscar Olima confirmed receiving resignation letters from these employees, who chose to leave rather than face disciplinary action from the county and other relevant authorities.

Of the 93 employees identified with fraudulent primary and secondary certificates, 25 have requested a hearing with the county public service board to present their case.

Olima stated that the board has allowed them the chance to defend themselves before any further actions are taken.

The investigation also extends to county workers with dubious college certificates as part of the ongoing efforts to eliminate underserving employees with fake academic qualifications.

Accordin to Olima, the purge is based on an audit report from the Human Resource Audit Institute in 2023 and a staff headcount report by the county government, which laid bare the shortcomings of the workforce.

The authenticity of the primary and secondary school certificates was verified by the Kenya National Examination Council, which reviewed the academic papers of over 2,700 county employees.

All 93 workers with fake academic papers have been removed from the payroll, although the public service board is providing them an opportunity to explain their side of the story.
