Police in Migwani sub-County, Kitui County on Thursday retrieved the body of a male youth who drowned while swimming alongside his friends.
Apparently, the deceased identified as Sivu James, accompanied his friends to swim in the swollen Ithenze earth dam on Wednesday at around 7pm.
Not long afterwards, locals alerted the Winzyeei sub-location head Daniel Mbetu about a missing person in the dam.
Mr Mbetu immediately alerted officers based at Nguutani Police Station to kick start rescue operations, but the deceased could not be located as it was already night time.
Rescue operations resumed on Thursday where the body of the 19-year-old was retrieved and moved to Mwingi Hospital mortuary pending postmortem.
In Meru County, the body of a man was retrieved from Iriene Village Dam, Igembe sub-County.
A police report filed at Maua Police Station indicates the deceased, drowned in the dam on Tuesday, April 23.
After camping there for days, the man’s body was seen floating today (Thursday) by locals who alerted local authorities.
Igembe South fire brigade team retrieved the body and moved it to Nyambene sub-County Hospital mortuary pending postmortem.
The deceased has since been positively identified as Simon N’Toiti aged 27 years.
Elsewhere in Kitui County, a 60-year-old man identified as Robert Musyimi Mutua is said to have died of drowning.
At around 10:30am today (Thursday), locals of Ilani Village alerted their chief after spotting a body floating on River Lani.
Officers from Kanyonyo Police Station visited the scene and spearheaded retrieval process of the man’s body.
He was positively identified by his son Tiva Musyimi.
Apparently, the deceased was last seen at Lani shopping centre heading towards Katunene. Locals believe he drowned while attempting to cross the swollen river.
The body was moved to Kitui Level 5 Hospital mortuary pending postmortem.
This comes as President William Ruto chairs a meeting with the Emergency Multi Agency response team on floods at State House, Nairobi.
He directed the National Youth Service (NYS) to allocate land for people affected by floods particularly in Nairobi.
