3 people die during demolitions of houses in Mukuru, Mathare slums

Chaos erupted in Mukuru, Nairobi when angry residents chased away government officials who were demolishing houses in riparian areas of the slums.

According to the police, chaos erupted after details emerged that two children were killed as bulldozers demolished the houses built on riparian areas that are prone to floods.

Police intervened and restored order in the slums as the demolitions were also suspended.

Meanwhile, police have launched investigations into the matter after removing two bodies from the rubbles.

In a separate incident in Mathare slums, a 17-year-old boy was killed by an eviction team on Monday May 6, 2024.

The incident caused protests in Mathare, hours after President William Ruto toured the area to meet floods victims.

Angry protesters engaged police in running battles as police used teargas canisters to disperse them before removing the body of the boy from the scene.
