Four people were confirmed dead on Sunday April 7, after a bus they were traveling in, was involved in a road accident along the Meru-Embu highway.
The grisly accident occurred at Nithi Bridge involving a Kensliver Bus that was moving from Meru to Nairobi.
Confirming the accident, Meru County police commander Zacchaeus Ng’eno said the cause of the accident is still unknown but police have launched investigations into the matter.
Speaking during a press briefing at the scene of the road accident, the police commander called on drivers to be careful while on duty to avoid similar accidents in future.
“We call upon the drivers and vehicle owners to ensure their vehicles are inspected and certified as roadworthy,” he said.
However, according to eyewitnesses, the bus experienced a brake failure leading to it veering off the road and overturning.
The Sunday morning accident is not the first to happen at the Nithi Bridge, known to be a major black spot along the busy highway for a long time.
The black spot area is on a steep gradient covering three kilometers.
For instance, the worst accident at the same spot happened in August 2000, when 45 people were killed and at least 27 more injured after a passenger bus crashed into the river.
The Sunday morning accident occurred less than 24 hours after another accident involving six trucks in Timboroa along the Nakuru-Eldoret Highway.
According to the local authorities, five people perished in the Timboroa accident on Saturday April 6, 2024.
