Four people were confirmed dead on Tuesday December 17, 2024 after a goldmine collapsed in Lami Nyeusi, West Pokot County.
One survivor with a broken leg was rushed to the referral hospital in Kapenguria after the Tuesday morning incident.
According to the police report, the death toll is likely to rise since there were over 10 workers on site when the gold mine collapsed.
Pokot Central police commander Nelson Omwenga reported that rescue teams are still at the scene and the rescue exercise was ongoing.
Omwenga urged residents to remain calm as they wait for an official update from the rescue teams.
Speaking to TV47 in a phone call, area Chief Michael Mwotor confirmed that four bodies had been retrieved from the rubbles and rescue exercise was still ongoing.
Mwotor explained that among the four who were confirmed dead, three were men with one woman.
“So far, four people, three men and a lady have been confirmed dead as a result of the Tuesday morning incident that occurred at around 5.00 a.m.,” said the area chief.
