TIFA: 41% of Kenyans support Gachagua’s impeachment; Majority want Kindiki as his replacement

Most Kenyans (78%) are aware of the current effort by Members of Parliament (MPs) to remove Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua from office by way of impeachment, this is according to a survey by TIFA Research.

Overall, the survey released on Monday, October 7 shows that only 41% of Kenyans are in support of the impeachment motion, while 38% are against.

In Mt Kenya, the survey says, only 20% support the impeachment of DP Gachagua while 69% oppose.

Most Kenyans who support DP Gachagua’s impeachment cite ethnic discrimination/hate speech (35%), poor performance/bad leadership/false promises (20%) as the leading reasons for agreeing with plans of his removal from office.

Others believe that abuse of office (13%), disagreements with President William Ruto (12%) and disagreements with UDA leaders (2%) are other reasons behind his ouster motion.

Meanwhile, most of the respondents of the survey by TIFA (37%) expect Interior CS Kithure Kindiki to fill the vacancy if DP Gachagua is impeached.

The survey also shows that 36% of those opposed to impeachment believe that Gachagua is being attacked unfairly,18% say that he is a good leader, 15% say that DP Gachagua and President Ruto should both work together to finish their term, while 7% argue that they should both be impeached.
