A 55-year-old woman has been sentenced to 50 years in prison or a Ksh. 50 million fine after being found guilty of trafficking nearly 4 kilograms of heroin at the Busia One Border Point.
The convict, Mwaura Mumbi, was arrested on March 10, 2023, after authorities found 3.9 kilograms of heroin in her possession. The drugs had an estimated street value of Ksh. 11,808,000.
Following a rigorous legal battle, the Busia Court ruled against Mumbi, after the prosecution, led by Counsel Eric Mose, presented 10 key witnesses and critical exhibits proving her involvement in narcotics trafficking.
Harsh Penalty for Drug Trafficking
At 55 years, one would think Mumbi would be settling into a quiet retirement, maybe enjoying time with her grandkids or tending to a small farm. Instead, she’s now looking at a half-century behind bars, meaning she’ll be eligible for release at the ripe old age of 105 (if she doesn’t opt for the Ksh. 50 million fine)
She was charged under Section 4(a)(ii) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act No.4 of 2022, which carries heavy penalties for those found guilty of drug trafficking. The court sentenced her to 50 years behind bars or a Ksh. 50 million fine, reinforcing Kenya’s firm stance against drug-related crimes.
The War on Drugs at the Border
The Busia border, a key entry and exit point between Kenya and Uganda, has been flagged as a transit route for illicit substances. Authorities have ramped up surveillance efforts in a bid to curb drug smuggling and related criminal activities.
This latest sentencing serves as a stern warning to drug traffickers operating within the country.
