About six people were killed and more than 10 others were injured in a fire incident on Tuesday November 19, 2024 at night in Kitui Village, within Majengo slums in Nairobi’s Pumwani area.
According to reports, the fire broke out at around 8.30 pm and burnt down at least 50 houses rendering several families homeless.
At the same time, affected residents were forced to seek accommodation in the neighboring estates.
The victims were taken to nearby hospitals with varying degrees of injury, while emergency responders and police worked through the night to control the situation.
The incident was confirmed by Nairobi police chief Adamson Bungei who noted that they have launched investigations to determine the cause of the fire.
“So far, six people have been confirmed dead during the fire outbreak. They are all men, and we are investigating the tragedy,” said Bungei.
Meanwhile, the Kenya Red Cross reported attending to 16 survivors who had minor injuries, while searches for missing people were still ongoing.
“Together with the Nairobi City County Fire Department and community members, we have managed to contain a fire incident in Kitui Village, Majengo, Nairobi. The Kenya Red Cross remains on-site, supporting efforts to locate missing persons,” read part of the Kenya Red Cross statement posted on X.
Affected families are now pleading for help to rebuild their houses after losing their belongings during the fire tragedy.
