A 6-year-old boy died while five other family members were hospitalized after consuming poisonous cassava in the Ekerenyo area of Nyamira County.
According to the police report, the family, consisting of parents and four children aged 16, 12, 8, and 6, ate the cassava for lunch and later experienced stomach aches, vomiting, and diarrhea.
Neighbors rushed them to Ekerenyo Hospital for initial treatment before transferring them to Nyamira General Hospital for further medical care.
The youngest child passed away at Nyamira Hospital, while the parents and one child were treated and discharged. Another child remained in critical condition.
Police visited the family’s home, collected samples of the cassava, both cooked and uncooked, and initiated investigations into the incident.
