78-year-old granny runs to finish line at Chepsaita Cross Country

The inaugural Chepsaita Cross Country took place on Saturday, December 2, 2023, in Uasin Gishu, with athletics enthusiasts, including political leaders, athletics leaders, established athletes, and upcoming ones participating.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba, race patron and President William Ruto’s aide Farouk Kibet, Athletics Kenya President Jackson Tuwei, and marathon legend Eliud Kipchoge took part in the race.

Other notable figures that took to the field at the race are Majority leader in the National Assembly Kimani Ichungwah, Nandi Governor Stephen Sang, his Uasin Gishu County Governor, and Elgeyo Marakwet counterparts Jonathan Bii and Wisley Rotich in that order, among others.

World cross-country U-20 champion Ismael Kipkirui won the men’s race in a time of 23 minutes 16.2 seconds, while Edinah Jebitok emerged victorious in the ladies’ category.

“It was a tough field and I had to wait until the last lap to test their strength and it worked well. The many hills also proved challenging but worked well for training,” Kipkiruti told Nation Sport.

Granny defies odds to complete 500m race at Chepsaita Cross Country

In another noteworthy moment during the cross-country event, a 78-year-old granny captured the hearts of many by defying all odds to complete the 500-meter race.

The granny, just as thrilled with her accomplishment as the audience and fans, expressed gratitude to her creator for the remarkable feat.

“I am very happy because the world watched me today. I thank God for this. I did not train, but I have won a blanket. I am very happy, for this is the work of the Lord,” she said.
