Nigerian Grammy-winning artist Tems has officially canceled her upcoming concert in Kigali, Rwanda.
Citing concerns over the country’s alleged involvement in the escalating DR Congo conflict.
The “Free Mind” hitmaker made the announcement on X (formerly Twitter), expressing regret over her initial lack of awareness regarding Rwanda’s reported support for the M23 rebel group.
The rebels recently seized Goma, a crucial city in DR Congo’s mineral-rich east, intensifying tensions in the region.
“So I recently promoted my show in Rwanda without realizing that there is an ongoing conflict between Rwanda and Congo,” Tems wrote.
She further stated: “I never ever intend to be insensitive to real-world issues, and I sincerely apologize if this came across that way. My heart goes out to those affected.”
Her decision comes amid increasing international scrutiny of Rwanda’s alleged military involvement.
The UK government has hinted at reconsidering aid to Rwanda.
While a UN report in July claimed that Kigali has deployed thousands of troops in eastern DR Congo and holds “de facto control” over the M23 rebels—accusations Rwanda has firmly denied.
Rwandan President Paul Kagame has dismissed claims of direct military engagement but insists that peace will remain elusive unless FDLR.
A group linked to the perpetrators of the 1994 genocide, is dismantled.
Tems had been scheduled to perform at BK Arena in Kigali on March 22, 2025,
but will now proceed with her Johannesburg show at The Dome, Nasrec, on March 20, 2025—her first-ever concert in South Africa.
Her bold stance has drawn both praise and criticism, with some commending her awareness and activism,
While others argue that music should remain separate from politics.
