Police intercept meth worth KSh9.2 million at JKIA; suspect on the run

Anti-narcotics detectives at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) have blocked a sophisticated attempt to smuggle a substantial quantity of methamphetamine through the airport’s cargo facilities.

Acting on a credible tip-off received by the Anti-Narcotics Unit based at JKIA, the detectives immediately launched an investigation and conducted a thorough search at the FedEx Express warehouse located within the airport’s Mitchell Cott Shed cargo area.

During the search operation carried out on Monday, July 1, the detectives uncovered a parcel meticulously concealed within a larger consignment. Upon closer inspection, the parcel was found to contain 1.15 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine, a highly addictive and illicit stimulant drug.

The seized methamphetamine has an estimated street value of Kenyan KSh9.2 million (approximately US$72,000), highlighting the significant profits that drug traffickers seek to obtain through their illicit activities.

Investigations are currently underway to identify the trafficker or syndicate responsible for this attempted drug smuggling operation.

Detectives are also working to trace the intended destination of the seized drugs, which could potentially lead to the disruption of a larger drug distribution network.
