9 people die after bus plunges into River Mbagathi in Nairobi

At least nine people were confirmed dead after a Nairobi-bound bus plunged into River Mbagathi near Cooperative University in Karen on May 18, 2024.

Police also confirmed that several people were seriously injured during the incident.

According to the police, the bus belonging to Naboka Sacco was heading to Nairobi from Gataka when the driver lost control of the vehicle before plunging into the river.

“It happened that the vehicle was being driven from Gataka shopping centre towards Karen direction on reaching Mbagathi River, the driver lost control and plunged into the said river.

“As a result of the accident, 6 people died on the spot while 2 died while being rushed to hospital. 18 others were injured and rushed to various nearby hospitals.

One more had succumbed bringing the total number of fatalities to 9 and 17 injuries” read part of the police report.

The bus was retrieved from the river and towed to Ongata Rongai Police Station in Kajiado County.

The accident occurred at 0940hrs and involved motor vehicle registration KAY 185L Bus of Naboka Sacco driven by an unknown driver.
