Born and raised in Nanyuki, Edmonds Murithi Kagira has always had a deep connection to the arts. Currently pursuing a Bachelor of Music Technology at Kenyatta University, Edmonds balances his academic journey with a growing music career in the gospel industry. His passion for gospel music is driven by a desire to inspire and uplift others.
“For me, music isn’t just a career—it’s a ministry,” he shares. “I believe gospel music has the power to transform lives, and that’s my biggest motivation.”
Choosing gospel over mainstream music
While many young artists are drawn to secular music, Edmonds has remained committed to the gospel scene. Despite the challenges gospel artists face—limited airplay, fewer commercial opportunities, and the temptation to switch genres—he is determined to stay true to his calling.
“A lot of young musicians go for mainstream music because it seems more rewarding financially. But for me, gospel music is about purpose, not just fame or money,” he explains.
Acting: His first love
While music is his main focus today, Edmonds’ artistic journey actually began with acting and drama. In primary school at Brickwoods, he took part in several plays, including a lead role in Fake Signature during the Tap Out Talent Show.
“Acting was my first love. It really opened up my creativity and taught me to see life from different perspectives,” he says.
However, when he joined Lenana School, he stepped away from acting due to negative perceptions surrounding the drama club. Instead, he found a way to combine his love for performance and faith by participating in plays within the Christian Union (CU). One of his most memorable moments was performing a play about Joseph on KTN and at a CU service.
Balancing music and education
For many young artists, juggling school and music can be a challenge. However, Edmonds sees his studies as an extension of his passion.
“Studying music at Kenyatta University makes it easier to balance because my course complements my career. However, I have set boundaries—I avoid gigs and teaching jobs that interfere with my school hours. My priority is to finish my studies first,” he explains.
His discipline and long-term vision have kept him from chasing money prematurely, instead focusing on building a strong foundation for his future in music.
Role models and inspirations
In the gospel industry, Edmonds looks up to seasoned musicians who have remained true to their calling.
“I admire artists who have stayed consistent in gospel music, using their talent to impact lives positively. Integrity and longevity in the industry are qualities I truly respect,” he says.
Future aspirations and advice to young artists
As he continues to grow in the music scene, Edmonds is focused on creating impactful songs that resonate with the youth. He also hopes to revisit his acting career once he completes his studies.
For young artists hoping to enter the gospel music industry, Edmonds offers one key piece of advice:
“Stay true to your calling and don’t rush for quick success. Build your craft, remain disciplined, and trust the process.”
With his passion, discipline, and faith, Edmonds Murithi Kagira is carving out a space for himself in a genre that many young artists are hesitant to pursue and he’s determined to make an impact.
