A group of 22 Machakos County Assembly Members (MCAs) has vowed to fiercely oppose an impending motion set to be tabled, seeking to impeach Speaker Ann Kiusya.
The MCAs, mainly from the minority side, have declared their unwavering support for Speaker Kiusya, insisting that she will not be removed from office. They claim that the impeachment motion is being orchestrated unfairly and have pledged to expose the truth behind the motive.
Speaking to the press on Wednesday, March 26, Kinanie Ward MCA Francis Kavyu accused some of his colleagues, particularly those allied with the Wiper Party, of being susceptible to bribery.
He alleged that 30 MCAs had been sponsored for a trip to Mombasa, where they were strategising the impeachment motion.
Kyeleni Ward MCA Grace Bahati emphasised that they would not allow Speaker Kiusya — the only female Speaker in the country — to be unfairly ousted.
Meanwhile, Mwala Ward MCA Brian Kisila criticised the county government for neglecting key sectors such as health and education, arguing that the Assembly should focus on service delivery rather than political battles.
Masinga Central MCA Joshua Muonga asserted that the 22-member group has enough numbers to block any impeachment motion. He pointed out that with 59 MCAs in the Assembly, they only need 15 votes to prevent the motion from meeting the required 75% threshold. His sentiments were echoed by Mbiuni Ward MCA Peter Kilonzo.
Muthwani MCA Dominic Maitha, who is also part of those opposing the impeachment, last week accused Governor Wavinya Ndeti of being behind the impending impeachment of the speaker.
In a reciprocal move, Maitha threatened to introduce an impeachment motion against Governor Wavinya.
As political tensions escalate in the Machakos County Assembly, all eyes are now on how the impeachment process will unfold in the coming days.
