Kabarnet School for the Deaf and Blind, the largest institution of its kind in East and Central Africa, is extending a heartfelt invitation to lovers across the nation this Valentine’s Day.
While February 14th is traditionally a day for celebrating romantic love, the school is calling on individuals and couples to share their love with those often forgotten: the 75 deaf and blind students under their care.
For over two years, this vital institution has faced severe neglect from the government, receiving no capitation funds. Despite being a government institution under the Ministry of Education, the school has been forced to rely on the generosity of donors to survive. This precarious situation has left staff struggling and children, who require specialized care, sometimes going without basic necessities like food.
This Valentine’s Day, the school is organizing a 5km walk to raise much-needed funds. The walk aims to support both the dedicated staff and the vulnerable children who have been impacted by the government’s lack of support.
The school’s understaffing has been further compounded by the inability to pay casual staff, who were hired to supplement the efforts of the few remaining teachers. The absence of government funding has turned the daily operation of the school into a constant struggle.
As the day of love approaches, a passionate appeal resonates throughout the community. Lovers across the country are being urged to remember and share their love with these less fortunate children by registering for and participating in the 5km walk. The funds raised will be crucial for the continued operation of the school and ensuring the well-being of its students.
Baringo Governor Benjamin Cheboi has made a fervent call for support, urging lovers to share their affection on Valentine’s Day by bringing smiles to the faces of those the government has overlooked.
He further appealed to the national government to release the much-needed funds, emphasizing the critical importance of allowing the school to function effectively.
The governor’s plea highlights the urgent need for government intervention to alleviate the plight of Kabarnet School for the Deaf and Blind and its deserving students.
