Ababu Namwamba, Kenya’s nominee for Permanent Representative to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), has disclosed his net worth at Ksh.500 million.
uring his vetting before the National Assembly Committee on Defence, Intelligence, and Foreign Relations on Friday.
Namwamba revealed that his wealth comprises residential properties, business interests, shareholdings, and pension.
His current net worth marks an increase of Ksh.75 million from two years ago, when he declared Ksh.425 million while being vetted for the position of Sports Cabinet Secretary.
“I own two residences in Nairobi and Busia, along with business interests, shareholdings, and a pension. Together, these amount to Ksh.500 million,” Namwamba shared.
He refrained from detailing exact dividends but disclosed that his investments include stakes in major firms such as Safaricom, Cooperative Bank, and Kenya Power.
“I have interests in Safaricom, Coop Bank, and Kenya Power.
While I have indicated my income expectations, it’s challenging to provide specific dividend details as they vary across cycles,” he explained.
Namwamba emphasized his readiness for the UNEP role, describing himself as tailor-made to represent Kenya on the global stage.
He credited President William Ruto for offering him clear guidance on the position during a meeting at State House, Nairobi, prior to the public announcement of his nomination.
“The President took time to explain the responsibilities of this role before making it public. I know exactly what is expected of me in this capacity,” Namwamba affirmed.
Namwamba’s nomination is part of a broader reshuffle, with other nominees including former ICT CS Margaret Nyambura Ndung’u for High Commissioner to Ghana.
Gertrude Angote for High Commissioner to Zimbabwe, and former Agriculture CS Andrew Karanja as Kenya’s Ambassador to Brazil.
However, Ndung’u has since declined the Ghana posting, citing personal reasons.
As Namwamba awaits parliamentary approval, his confidence and detailed vision for the role highlight his determination to elevate Kenya’s global diplomatic presence.
With his extensive experience and clear endorsement from the President, Namwamba appears poised to make a significant impact at UNEP.
