Abraham Kibiwott has won Kenya’s third bronze medal in the 3000m steeplechase, bringing Kenya’s total medal tally at the 2024 Paris Olympics to five.
Morocco’s Soufiane El Bakkali retained his Olympic men’s 3000 meters steeplechase title on Wednesday, with American Kenneth Rooks taking silver.
Kibiwott rounded up the podium after fighting hard for third place as he clocked 8:06.47 to cross the finish line. Other Kenyans in the race, Koech and Serem managed to finish seventh and 14th in respective times of 8:09.26 and 8:19.74.
El Bakkali held his arms out wide as he crossed the finish line in 8:06.05, becoming the first back-to-back winner of the event since Finland’s Volmari Iso-Hollo in 1932 and 1936.
World record holder Lamecha Girma of Ethiopia tripped over a barrier on the last lap and landed hard on the track, lying motionless long after the race had finished. Medical staff carried him off on a stretcher.
After finishing 10th at the Tokyo Olympics, Abraham Kibiwott makes a come-back and clinches the 3,000M SC bronze medal at the Paris Olympic Games with a season’s best of 8:06.47.
