Renowned Kenyan human rights activist Agnes Odhiambo has sadly passed away.
Her death was confirmed by Emma Daly, the Communication Director of Human Rights Watch (HRW).
Emma shared a statement on social media, on Tuesday, October 10, 2023, sharing the sad news.
Agnes Odhiambo was widely known for her tireless efforts in combatting child marriage.
She was vocal in advocating for the education of pregnant girls to get a fair chance in education.
Agness also championed the rights of women suffering from obstetric fistula in Kenya.
Moreover, she embarrassed panafricanism and shed light on substandard maternity care in South Africa.
Consequently, Agness also highlighted the physical and psychological trauma endured by survivors of rape during Kenya’s post-election violence.

Mourning Agness
Emma Daly expressed her sadness and shared a comprehensive eulogy from Human Rights Watch, paying tribute to Agnes Odhiambo’s legacy.
HRW, an international non-governmental organization dedicated to human rights research and advocacy, described her as a senior women’s rights researcher who dedicated her career.
It shared that Agness was dedicated to improving the lives of women and girls in sub-Saharan Africa.
She was known for her creative, thoughtful, and strategic approach to advocacy.
Tirana Hassan, Executive Director of Human Rights Watch, praised Agnes Odhiambo’s unwavering commitment.

Her work history
She noted that Agnes always focused on removing barriers and improving the outlook for women and girls, even in the face of daunting challenges.
Agnes Odhiambo has been with Human Rights Watch since 2009, investigating violations of women’s rights across Africa.
Prior to her work with HRW, she collaborated with the media to champion women’s rights and provide a platform for women’s voices.
Carine Kaneza Nantulya, deputy Africa Director at Human Rights Watch, remembered Agnes as a dedicated and passionate advocate.
She stated that her work, especially in advancing the cause of pregnant girls’ education in Africa, was praised as brilliant and impactful.
Agness has left a mark on women’s empowerment and the strife to advance human rights in Kenya and Africa.
