ACK Archbishop Jackson Ole Sapit asks President Ruto to reconstitute IEBC

The Anglican Church of Kenya Archbishop Jackson Ole Sapit has urged President William Ruto’s government to reconstitute the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

Speaking after a Sunday service on December 8, 2024, Ole Sapit noted that the delay in reconstituting the electoral body is likely to cause a constitutional crisis in the country.

“We will need an IEBC that is completely prepared to handle the 2027 elections in good time for procurement purposes and make sure that we run an election by a team that is well prepared,” said Ole Sapit.

The Archbishop added that appointing new commissioners will enable IEBC to register Kenyans as new voters in preparation for the 2027 general elections.

“IEBC needs time to clean up the register. They need time to ensure unregistered Kenyans especially among the youth are registered,” he added.

According to the ACK leader, the delay in appointing new IEBC commissioners is a violation of rights of Kenyans, and should be addressed urgently.

“Let us put the best interest of the country before our own and when we do that then Kenya will be a good place for all of us,” he said.

His sentiments were echoed by opposition leaders led by Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, who accused President William Ruto of delaying the process of constituting the electoral body.

Kalonzo refuted claims that he was to blame for a court case that derailed the formation of the IEBC selection panel.

“On IEBC, we adhered to the strict timelines of the Court and we gave the name Koki Muli.

“The State itself has filed an appeal with the Kiambu High Court against our decision. They want candidates who are easy to influence and manipulate,” said Kalonzo.

“Speaker Wetangula is also part of the conspiracy against Kenyans. If they had taken time to marshall Parliament, as they did with Riggy G, the country would not be in a constitutional crisis,” he added.

However, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki On Sunday defended the Kenya Kwanza government noting that the lack of a functional IEBC arose from a court injunction.
