President Addo champions reform

President Akufo-Addo stated that it is long overdue to correct the past injustice subjected upon Africa.

Additionally he highlighted that the current structure of the UN Security Council represents historical injustices against the nations of Africa.

He stressed that their views on the need for reform have been even more strongly re-asserted.

Moreover, this comes after serving on the Council during these challenging times in the world.

Addressing world leaders gathering, he pointed out that the UN, in its current shape, cannot be just.

He said it “cannot continue to preach democracy, equality, and good governance around the globe.”

“It cannot insist on peace and justice in the world” to represent the world.”

This is because “people of the world perceive it as hampered by an unjust and unfair structure.” President Akufo-Addo stated.

Nevertheless, Ghana is currently serving out the second of her two-year term on the Security Council as a non-permanent member.

Addo’s disappointment

However, President Akufo-Addo expressed disappointment at the fact that African countries experience unequal treatment at the UN.

“At first hand, over and over again, the big powers of the United Nations might be preaching democracy, fairness, and justice around the world but are happy to practice the opposite here at the UN”

He shared that the United Nations is “prioritizing parochial interests over those of humanity.”

He shared a strong belief that despite all the proud achievements in 78 year of existence, treatment of African countries is unchanging

The UN’s reluctance to change

African nations deal with “the reluctance by the UN to agree to any reform to reflect present realities.

He explains that this “has led to the undermining of the credibility of the United Nations”

In conclusion, he stressed that if the UN had chosen to rebuild trust to restore stability, it had to self correct on its current course.

The current course the UN assembly is on, is not one that can be hidden from scrutiny globally.

President Akufo-Addo stated that the UN “is seen by many as helping to perpetuate an unfair world order.”

It is this that has been “reinforced by an inequitable, dysfunctional global financial architecture.” singling out Africa.
