Kenya Under-18 captain Amos Wanjala believes that his time at Athletic Club Torrellano in Spain, along with intensive local training, will significantly enhance Kenya’s performance in the upcoming AFCON U-20 CECAFA qualifiers.
After a narrow 1-0 loss in a friendly match against FKF Premier League side FC Talanta at Police Sacco Stadium, Wanjala expressed his optimism about the Rising Stars’ tournament prospects.
“I’ve gained valuable experience from my time in Spain, and here in camp, we’re all learning and growing as a team. Our goal is to play as one unit and win the tournament,” said Wanjala.
The talented midfielder joined the Spanish fifth-tier club AC Torrellano earlier this year on a three-year deal, following his transition from Nastic Tarragona, the professional arm of Nastic Academy. Wanjala had previously trained with St. Anthony’s Kitale, a renowned Kenyan football institution, alongside other young talents like Aldrine Kibet.
Wanjala’s exposure to Spanish football is expected to be a key asset as Kenya prepares for the AFCON U-20 CECAFA qualifiers, scheduled from October 6 to 20, 2024, in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Kenya has been drawn into Group A alongside hosts Tanzania, Rwanda, Sudan, and Djibouti. Defending champions Uganda will compete in Group B, joined by South Sudan, Burundi, and Ethiopia.
