The Kenya Defense Force emerged as the champions of the 2024 Athletics Kenya (AK) National Championships after securing a total of 49 medals in the two events held at the Ulinzi Complex, which also served as the trials for the African Senior Athletics Championships.
The National Police finished second with 34 medals, while Kenya Prisons claimed third place in the table with 19 medals as the curtains closed on the event.
On day one, Mercy Wanjiru of the Kenya Defense Force clinched the women’s 3000m SC finals in 9:45.08, earning her the title of the 2024 AK National Champion. Leah Jeruto and Judy Jepkoech secured second and third place, respectively.
Ugandan Joy Cheptoyek emerged as the winner in the women’s 10,000 meters race, clocking 32:31.8.
Meshack Babu timed 10:35s to edge out Mark Otieno in the men’s 100m finals, becoming the national champion on the second day of the championships.
The women’s 100 saw Esther Mbagari of Prisons clocking 11.77s, beating the Police duo of Monicah Sefania (11.93s) and Eunice Kadogo (12.01s) for the championship.
In the men’s 200 finals, Mike Mokamba clocked a time of 20.62s to lead a tight podium, followed by Samuel Chege (20.63s) and Dan Kiviasi (20.71s).
Prison’s Kipng’etich Ngeno defended his 800m men Athletics Kenya National Athletics Championships title with a time of 1:45.03, ahead of Stanley Kebenei (KDF), while Olympic silver medalist in the 1500m, Timothy Cheruiyot (Prisons), won bronze.
Athletics Kenya AK will use the trials to pick the team that will head to Cameroon for the week-long Africa games.
