Aldrine Kibet wins Golden Boot at 2023 CECAFA U18 championship

Aldrine Kibet has won the Golden Boot at the just concluded 2023 CECAFA U18 championship at the Jomo Kenyatta Stadium in Mamboleo, Kisumu.

Kibet won the award thanks to the three goals he scored in the group stages of the tournament. The former St. Anthony Boys – Kitale, opened his account with a goal against Sudan in Kenya’s 5-0 victory in their Group A opener.

The second match for Junior Stars was against Rwanda, and Kenya won the game 1-0, thanks to Aldrine Kibet’s first-half goal, which sent Salim Babu’s lads into the semifinals.

In Kenya’s final group game against Somalia on Friday, December 1, 2023, at the Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega, Aldrine Kibet was relegated to the bench by head coach Salim Babu.

He was, however, introduced in the second half as Kenya claimed a 4-1 victory with the 16-year-old on the scoresheet once again.

Kenya progressed to the semifinals with a perfect record, having won all their group matches, and the Nastic Soccer Academy attacker also had a personal record – he had scored in all group games.

Kibet started Kenya’s semifinal match against Tanzania on Tuesday, December 5, 2023, but fired blanks before being subbed off in the 68th minute.

In Friday’s final against Uganda, the striker started on the bench alongside speedy winger Tyron Kariuki Junior. Kibet came on for Humphrey Aroko at the start of the second half.

Aldrine Kibet, however, did not manage to find the back of the net, as Kenya’s sole goal in the 2-1 loss to Uganda came from MOFA FC forward Syphas Owuor, who also scored Kenya’s winning penalty in the semifinal against Tanzania.
