All is set for the 2024 CHAN draw, to be conducted at the iconic KICC

President William Ruto is set to welcome CAF President Patrice Motsepe and other African football dignitaries tonight at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) for the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 draw. The event, scheduled to begin at 8:00 PM Kenyan time, marks a historic milestone for Kenya as it prepares to co-host the tournament for the first time.

Legends to Assist with the Draw

The draw will feature iconic East African football legends: Hassan Wasswa (Uganda), Mrisho Ngasa (Tanzania), and Kenya’s own McDonald Mariga, who grew up in Nairobi. These legends will serve as draw assistants, adding a touch of regional pride to the proceedings.

Tournament Overview

Although the CHAN 2024 competition was recently postponed from February to August 2025, the draw remains on schedule. A total of 19 teams, including defending champions Senegal and two-time champions Morocco, will learn their group-stage pairings for the tournament.

The Iconic Venue: KICC

The Kenyatta International Convention Centre, a landmark of architectural brilliance in the heart of Nairobi, provides a fitting stage for this prestigious event. Completed in 1973, the 32-story building is celebrated for its cylindrical design and panoramic views of the city. The KICC is not only a hub for conferences and exhibitions but also a symbol of Kenya’s modernity and rich cultural heritage.

Nairobi’s Role as Host City

Nairobi, East Africa’s commercial and innovation hub, will play a significant role in CHAN 2024. The city is home to renowned football clubs like Gor Mahia, AFC Leopards, Tusker, and Mathare United, all of which contribute to the country’s vibrant football culture. Hosting the draw at Nairobi’s signature building underscores the city’s importance in African football and its readiness to host continental events.
