African tennis champion Angella Okutoyi will later on Thursday face 22-year-old American Csilla Fodor in a Round of 32 match at the W35 Bethany Beach Women’s Singles tournament in Delaware as she hopes to advance beyond the quarterfinals in her last two events to enhance her chances of making the Olympics cut.
Okutoyi, who is now ranked 521st, up from 544th, is seeking to gain 65 more points to rise to 400th by June 10th in order to participate in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
The 20-year-old’s journey to the summer games was met with setbacks in the form of a quarterfinal loss in her last event in Boca Raton, Florida, followed by a qualifying round loss in Charlottesville late last month.
“Mentally, I have to muster the grit to ensure I advance beyond the quarterfinals and aim for the finals of the upcoming tournaments to improve my chances of playing in the Olympics,” Okutoyi said last week regarding her targets in one of her remaining two opportunities.
The 2023 Kenya Open champion is expected to conclude her pursuit when she participates in the W15 tournament in San Diego from May 27th to June 2nd.
Okutoyi will face the American 22-year-old Csilla Fodor in a Round of 32 matchup at Court 23 at 17:30 East African Time.
