Tennis sensation Angella Okutoyi will hit the court today to take on Russian Daria Kudashova as she seeks to climb up the world tennis rankings to 400th, to secure an Olympic slot.
Okutyoi, currently at 496th place in the WTA ranking, enters her final lap in the qualification for the Paris games, taking part in the W50 La Marsa tournament in Tunisia.
She is set to take on Georgian fourth-seeded Mariam Bolkvadze ranked(329)in the first round. The 20-year-old aims to get not less than 50 points in this week’s competition.
Angella Okutoyi set herself up for an Olympic qualification when she won the African Games Tennis championships in Ghana.
What Okutoyi must achieve to head to the Olympics
In the W50 competition athletes outside the 400th rank who are also champions in their respective continents are required to reach the finals of the two events to meet the International Tennis Federation requirements.
During the completion, a player is awarded one point for reaching the Round of 32, 6 points in the Round of 16,11 points if he/she reaches the quarter-finals and 33 points for the finals.
This means Okutoyi should reach the finals to get the maximum points and anything less would halt her dream of qualifying for the 2024 Paris Olympics which is a month away.
