The African Games tennis champion, Angela Okutoyi, is aiming to secure a spot to represent Kenya at the 2024 Paris Olympics, and she is well on course.
Okutoyi needs to be ranked 400th in the world before June 10th to secure her place at the Paris Games.
The 20-year-old is on a mission to earn ranking points in Florida, United States, at the ITF 35 Boca Raton tournament.
A win would put her just 30 spots away from achieving the Olympic dream. Currently, Okutoyi is ranked 549th in the world in singles.
Angela Okutoyi is set to face off against American Lilian Poling today at 6:30 PM EAT on court 10. This comes after she advanced to the last 16 of the W35 Boca Raton tournament in Florida with a straight-sets victory in her first outing since late April.
The emerging tennis star defeated 17-year-old American An Claire 6-4, 6-3 in the Round of 32 match-up.
She heads into the last 16 with hopes of qualifying for the Summer Games. In April, Okutoyi suffered a defeat in the qualifying round to American Sophie Chang in the W75 Charlottesville tournament, which was a setback in her quest for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, scheduled for Friday, July 26, 2024 – Sunday, August 11, 2024.
However, a strong performance in Florida will make amends, even though it might mean sacrificing her participation in Auburn’s Berkeley Regional tournament expected to start on Friday.
