WWE icon and Hollywood superstar John Cena has had enough of fans turning his legendary “You can’t see me” catchphrase into a long-running joke.
After nearly 15 years of internet memes and playful taunts, the 47-year-old wrestling veteran finally snapped during the March 17 episode of WWE RAW, marking his first official appearance since his shocking heel turn at WWE Elimination Chamber.
John Cena Calls Out Fans Over ‘Invisible’ Jokes
In a fiery long speech, Cena blasted fans and critics alike, calling them “pathetic” and “jealous” for continuously mocking his iconic gesture.
“You steal my time. You’ve made me your friggin’ toy,” Cena raged. “I am an object to you. You have made me the butt of a stupid, invisible joke for 15 years, and you still think it’s funny. It’s not funny it’s pathetic.”
The Origins of ‘You Can’t See Me’
Cena’s signature taunt wasn’t initially meant to be a global phenomenon. As revealed in his 2016 book, Hustle, Loyalty & Respect: The World of John Cena, the phrase stemmed from a playful challenge with his younger brother, Sean.
While listening to hip-hop beats for Cena’s debut album, Sean started dancing in a unique way, waving his hand in front of his face. He dared John to do the same on WWE TV, and the rest is history.
Cena slightly modified the move, incorporating a hand-shaking motion around his head. What started as a simple taunt soon became a wrestling trademark, fueling his rise to superstardom.
Cena’s Take on the Catchphrase
Despite its global popularity, Cena has never been fond of calling “You can’t see me” a catchphrase.
“Let me state for the record that I hate the word ‘catchphrase.’ It’s like ‘think outside the box’ or any of those other marketing terms it’s just ugly.”
While Cena may dislike the label, there’s no denying that “You can’t see me” remains one of wrestling’s most recognizable taunts, securing his legacy inside and outside the ring.
Will Cena’s Heel Persona Erase ‘You Can’t See Me’?
Now that Cena has turned heel for the first time in nearly two decades, fans wonder if he will abandon the phrase entirely or use it in a more sinister fashion.
With the WWE Universe divided, one thing is certain: Cena’s new persona is must-watch television.
