Artist who defined Obama’s campaign with ‘Hope’ poster creates ‘Forward’ for Kamala Harris

Shepard Fairey, the artist renowned for his iconic “Hope” poster that became a defining symbol of Barack Obama’s 2008 campaign, has once again channelled his artistic vision into the political arena.

This time, Fairey has crafted a powerful new piece for Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential bid, aptly titled “Forward.”

The poster features Harris in shades of blue, her image contrasted by striking red lipstick. She is portrayed wearing a pearl earring and necklace, symbolizing elegance and strength.

In a news release announcing the poster, Fairey explained the significance of the title, quoting Harris:

“We are not going back.”

He emphasized that to ensure progress, the nation must move forward, a sentiment he believes Harris embodies.

In addition to unveiling the artwork, Fairey offered his endorsement of Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.

He expressed his belief that they represent the best hope for resisting the rise of fascism and safeguarding democracy.

Curveballs along the way

However, Fairey’s journey in political art has not always been straightforward.

Years after creating the “Hope” poster, Fairey expressed disappointment in Obama, admitting in a 2015 interview with Esquire that the former president had compromised on issues Fairey hadn’t anticipated.

This sentiment was echoed in his decision not to create artwork for Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign.

Stating that he didn’t find her inspiring enough to illustrate, despite his strong opposition to Donald Trump.

Nevertheless, Fairey didn’t remain silent during Trump’s presidency.

These posters became symbols of resistance and unity in the face of division.

Although Fairey did not create artwork endorsing Joe Biden in 2020, he continued to use his talent to advocate for critical issues. Partnering with Greenpeace USA, Fairey produced a poster titled “Which Future Will You Deliver?”

The artwork urged Biden to fulfil his climate campaign promises, depicting a stark choice between a world devastated by fossil fuels and a cleaner, sustainable Earth.

With his “Forward” poster, he once again reminds the public of the power of art to inspire change and push for progress.
