Ashraf Kiiza: Machete-wielding man captured in viral video attacking businessman arrested

Ashraf Kiiza, the machete-wielding man captured on viral video while violently attempting to rob a business on May 13, 2024 has been arrested.

Kiiza was arrested on Wednesday, May 15 in Kyotera District where he had fled to hide.

The suspect was captured by the Flying Squad Unit attached to the Police Directorate of Crime Intelligence, after being on the run for two days.

In the disturbing video, Kiiza is seen attacking businessman Sam Turyamuhaki, while armed with a machete that he had successfully managed to sneak into the premises.

The 55-year-old businessman, in a heroic display, is seen defending himself from Kiiza. He however sustained some injuries to the head and is currently receiving treatment.

Kiiza is seen taking off from the scene once his mission to the business proved to be harder than he expected.

The assailant is being held at Nateete Police Station, with authorities revealing that he shall be arraigned in court once investigations into the matter are concluded.

“Ashraf Kiiza was located in Kyotera on March 15 and is now being detained at Nateete Police Station. Further investigations are ongoing, and he will be prosecuted accordingly in the courts of law,” stated the Uganda Police Force on X (formerly Twitter).

Deputy Public Relations Officer for Kampala Metropolitan Police Luke Owoyesigyire said that the arrest is a big milestone in the fight to ensure public safety.

“The arrest of Ashraf Kiiza marks a significant step in ensuring justice for the victim and maintaining public safety in the region.”
