At least two people have succumbed to injuries in the Thursday night fire in Embakasi Village, Nairobi County.

Confirming the reports, Embakasi OCPD Wesley Kimeto stated that the deceased are one adult and a minor who passed away at around 4:30am Friday.

They were among the dozens who were critically injured from the explosion that emanated from a gas company.

According to Red Cross, at least 29 people who were critically injured were transferred to Kenyatta National Hospital. It is emerging that others have been taken to Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral & Research Hospital.

167 victims have so far treated at Mama Lucy Hospital in Nairobi; 142 adults and 25 children, many with inhalation injuries.

Emergency responders including firefighters, medics and police are currently on site as they put out the fire.

A few minutes to midnight, multiple explosions followed by the huge fire that sent smokes in the sky sent Embakasi residents into panic.

Confirming the incident, Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura says the fire broke out at Kentainers Company ltd near Kabansora in Embakasi.

Preliminary investigations have revealed that the company was refilling gas cylinders when the fire started, with several people injured and rushed to hospital.

“The building hosting the company is badly damaged. The cause of the fire remains unknown. Members of the public are advised to avoid the area as rescue operations are underway including fire engines being deployed to the area,” Mwaura said.

Meanwhile, the government is expected to issue a comprehensive report of what transpired and mitigation measures to contain the fire and rescue victims.

More than 100 families have been evicted at Mradi Village as emergency response teams move swiftly to contain the escalating situation.

The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has been put on the spot over the matter, with Kenyans arguing that a gas company should not be situated within a residential area.
