Atheists in Kenya welcome Pope Francis decision on same-sex blessings

On December 18, 2023, a groundbreaking ruling, sanctioned by Pope Francis, approved for Catholic priests to bestow blessings upon same-sex couples.

This monumental decision resonates globally among the Catholic faithful and particularly impacts the Christian community in Kenya.

Harrison Mumia applauded this significant development in a press statement released on Monday.

Emphasizing its importance in conveying a clear message to the religious community in Kenya.

The message is crystal clear: gay rights are human rights.

Additionally stating that there is no inherent immorality or sinfulness attached to same-sex relationships.

The backdrop for this appreciation stems from the escalating anti-LGBTQ activities witnessed in Kenya over the past few years.

Prominent politicians and religious leaders, including President William Ruto, have been actively opposing LGBTQ rights.

The atheist society commended the Vatican’s progressive decision and viewed it as a transformative step.

Especially toward recognizing and affirming the rights of the LGBTQ community.

Moreover, in the face of opposition from some influential figures in Kenyan society.
