Atheists support demolition of Bishop Margaret Wanjiru’s church

The Society of Atheists in Kenya have supported the government decision to demolish Bishop Margaret Wanjiru’s Jesus Is Alive Ministries Church along Haile Selassie Avenue in Nairobi.

In a statement dated March 6, 2024, the Atheists president Harrison Mumia noted that the government of Kenya does not owe special treatment to Bishop Wanjiru, solely because of her position as a religious leader.

“We wish to clarify that the State does not owe any special treatment to Pastor Wanjiru solely because of her position as a religious leader.

“The Kenyan Constitution mandates that the religious majority should not receive preferential treatment.

“If Pastor Wanjiru has violated any laws, the legal process should proceed as normal,” read part of the Atheists statement.

The statement emerged after the government ordered the demolition of the Jesus Is Alive Ministries Building, a church belonging to Bishop Margaret Wanjiru on March 6.

Bishop Wanjiru who is a former Nairobi gubernatorial aspirant expressed her frustrations, claiming that the demolition was politically staged.

“I wasn’t campaigning to be repaid like this. It is very sad that this is the government that we campaigned for,” Wanjiru claimed.

“I am yet to believe that they can do this to me. I am the one who sold UDA in Nairobi,” she added.

The preacher claimed she was  injured during the incident as she tried to stop the officers from carrying out the demolition.

According to Bishop Wanjiru, the people who were demolishing her church told her that it had been constructed on government land.
