A Ugandan Athlete Rebecca Cheptegei is in critical condition after her lover set her on fire at their home in Trans Nzoia County.

Rebecca participated in 10,000 meters race and finished in 44th position during the Paris Olympics.

Upon Cheptegei’s arrival, she encountered Ndiema, who had already purchased petrol, waiting for her.

A dispute erupted, leading to Ndiema pouring petrol on Cheptegei and igniting the flames.

“Upon her return, Dickson, who had acquired petrol, started pouring it on Rebecca before igniting her,” Chebet mentioned.

In a distressing twist, her boyfriend also caught fire while trying to light the match to set Cheptegei ablaze.

Neighbors as heroes in the face of fire

Neighbors sprang into action, swiftly putting off the flames that had enveloped both Cheptegei and Ndiema.

Thereafter, they were transferred from Kitale Referral Hospital to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret due to the seriousness of their burns.

What the police discovered at the scene

At the scene, law enforcement discovered a yellow jerrycan, a black Mavin suspected to be Ndiema’s, and a charred mobile phone believed to belong to Cheptegei.

According to the reports, it was revealed that the two had been quarrelling over land and house.

Additionally it was revealed that Rebecca’s lover sneaked into their home on Sunday, 1st September, in her absence.
