Francis Atwoli, Secretary General of the Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU), has called on President William Ruto.
He urged him to pause the assent of the contentious Finance Bill 2024 amid rising tensions and protests across Kenya.
Speaking at a press conference today, Atwoli emphasized that the recent chaos, including violence and property damage during Tuesday’s demonstrations, was not representative of the peaceful intentions of Kenyan youth, particularly GenZ.
“The protests were infiltrated by goons who hijacked the genuine concerns of our young people,”
Atwoli asserted.
“They had legitimate grievances, and the President himself acknowledged the need to engage with them. However, what transpired yesterday was not what they intended.”
Atwoli urged President Ruto to delay the bill’s assent and instead establish a commission of inquiry to address the grievances raised by GenZ and other Kenyans.
He highlighted the importance of maintaining democratic gains and preventing further escalation of violence.
“While we understand the government’s need for budgetary provisions, suspending the Finance Bill temporarily is crucial,” Atwoli stated.
“It is imperative to open dialogue and address the broader concerns of these young people beyond just financial matters.”
He called for the immediate formation of the inquiry committee to facilitate constructive dialogue and find sustainable solutions.
The protests on Tuesday resulted in tragic deaths and the destruction of public property, prompting President Ruto to condemn the violence and reinforce security measures.
The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) were deployed to support the police.
While pending parliamentary approval as mandated by Article 241 of the Constitution.
Atwoli’s plea reflects a growing urgency to resolve the crisis through dialogue and inclusive decision-making, emphasizing the need for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing unrest in Kenya.
