COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli on Wednesday, October 9 strongly dismissed speculations linking him to the role of Deputy President following the impeachment of Rigathi Gachagua.
Atwoli addressed the seemingly growing chatter that has been circulating in political circles about his possible involvement in national leadership.
The long-serving trade unionist was categorical in his response, stating that his focus remains an elder and advisor.
“I am just an elder and advisor,” he said on X, formerly Twitter.
The speculation linking Atwoli to the Deputy President role comes amid rising political realignments in Kenya, as various factions jockeying for influence following the impeachment of Rigathi Gachagua by the National Assembly on Tuesday, October 8. Atwoli remains resolute that he has no interest in being part of these political maneuvers.
“Those people who are busy peddling rumors under some unknown research document, on who should be considered for DP from Western Kenya, should stop and forget such unprocessed thoughts,” he said.
Atwoli’s remarks come amidst speculation that a politician from the Western Kenya region, particularly Luhya leaders, could be considered for the Deputy President position if Gachagua is successfully ousted by the Senate.
The impeachment of Gachagua is now set to move to the Senate, where the final decision on his removal will be made. If the Senate upholds the impeachment, President Ruto will be tasked with nominating a new Deputy President, further fueling the ongoing political debate.
