Professor Lukoye Atwoli, the son of Francis Atwoli, the Secretary-General of COTU has been elected as a member of the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) in the United States of America.
This honour is one of the highest accolades in the fields of health and medicine.
The body acknowledges individuals who have made substantial contributions to the medical profession.
Aga Khan University released a statement announcing Lukoye Atwoli’s election.

Atwoli’s contribution
Professor Lukoye currently serves as the Dean of the university’s Medical College at Aga Khan University.
He was recognized for his contributions and advocacy in the areas of global mental health care policy, education, and epidemiology.
Lukoye Atwoli has also gained acclaim for his leadership roles, including serving as the Dean of two innovative medical schools.
Furthermore, Professor Lukoye co-chairs the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s Board on Global Health.

Lukoye’s statement
In response to this achievement, Atwoli credited his colleagues at Aga Khan University and the professionals he has collaborated with.
He was keen to highlight the collective efforts of his colleagues in earning global recognition.
“It is an incredible honour for me to be elected to the US National Academy of Medicine.” He shared.
“This election is in recognition of the work we do here in Africa and globally, hopefully impacting our populations by meeting them at their point of need,” he remarked.
As a member of the Academy, Atwoli expressed his intention to offer his knowledge and experience while benefiting from the expertise of his esteemed colleagues.

Lukoye Atwoli was one of the 100 new members elected to the Academy during its annual meeting.
The President of NAM, Victor Dzau, noted that the contributions of these new members in the field of medicine are invaluable.
Dzau shared that the new member’s contribution and expertise will be crucial in addressing global health challenges.
This recognition comes following Lukoye Atwoli’s election as an international member of the American Psychiatric Association (APA).
His election to the APA took place earlier in January 2023, in recognition of his support for mental health research.
Additionally, he is a member of the World Health Organization’s (WHO’s) World Mental Health Surveys Consortium.
The consortium is a prominent collaborative project in the field of psychiatry on a global scale.
