Azimio threatens to mobilise other unions to join doctors strike

Leaders of the Azimio la Umoja coalition have threatened to mobilize other unions and members of the public to join the doctors strike if the government fails to resolve the health crisis in the country.

Speaking during a press briefing in Nairobi on Wednesday May 8, 2024, Azimio leaders expressed concerns over the two months of doctors’ strike that has disrupted healthcare services in the country.

“This is another disaster that has been occasioned by a disastrous Kenya Kwanza regime in its failure to fully and promptly address the doctors’ concerns.

“The doctors’ strike continues to highlight the incompetence of the Kenya Kwanza regime in dealing with the healthcare system in the country,” Azimio noted in a statement.

Led by Raila Odinga, the opposition leaders noted that the response from the regime has not only been inadequate but also completely out of touch with the reality facing the people.

“We, ask the Kenya Kwanza regime to take advantage of the 48-hour window given by the courts and immediately reach an agreement with doctors that will see a resumption of normalcy in public hospitals, failure to which, we shall mobilize the public and other unions to join in a national strike,” stated Azimio.

Meanwhile, the opposition leaders thanked the 149 members of the National Assembly who voted to impeach Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi.

The leaders noted that they are expecting eleven members of the select committee to honor the vote of the 149 members and confirm Linturi’s impeachment from office.

“Linturi’s reign at the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development has been an unprecedented disaster.

“Kenyan farmers were supplied with fake fertilizer that not only destroyed the entire planting and harvest season but also degraded their land,” noted Azimio.

Apart from the impending impeachment, they also insisted that Linturi must also be tried in the anti-corruption courts for the crimes of economic sabotage.
