Babu Owino explains absence during Gachagua’s Impeachment vote, calls process a ‘Waste of time’

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, known for his vocal stance on national issues, has broken his silence regarding his absence during the impeachment proceedings of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

The lawmaker, whose full name is Paul Ongili, addressed concerns raised by Kenyans after 281 MPs voted in favour of impeaching Gachagua without his participation.

Taking to his social media platforms, Babu Owino dismissed the impeachment process as futile and unproductive, stating that there are more pressing issues facing the country.

“Why would I waste an entire day discussing Rigathi’s impeachment when we have serious issues like Adani’s takeover of JKIA, high taxation, unemployment, and the struggling Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF)?” Owino questioned.

The outspoken MP argued that Parliament should prioritize critical challenges such as the rising cost of living, the new university funding models, and job creation. He specifically highlighted the proposed takeover of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) by Adani Holdings, describing it as an urgent issue requiring immediate parliamentary attention.

Owino explained that his absence during the impeachment debate was due to his focus on addressing urgent concerns affecting his constituents in Embakasi East. He emphasized that he would only attend parliamentary sessions if they deal with significant matters that directly impact Kenyans’ daily lives.

“The speed used to impeach Rigathi should be the same speed used to address Kenyans’ challenges,” Owino said, urging his fellow lawmakers to concentrate on finding solutions to the country’s real problems.

Babu Owino was not the only high-profile lawmaker to miss the vote. Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris and Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro were also notably absent, sparking further questions from the public about their silence on the issue.
