Babu Owino eyes opposition leadership as Raila pursues AUC chair: “I’m ready to step up”

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has expressed his readiness to take the reins of Kenya’s opposition.

Should Raila Odinga assume the role of Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC).

Babu, known for his boldness and tenacity, believes he is well-equipped to step into Raila’s shoes, having faced numerous challenges in his political journey.

During an interview on TV 47 on Friday, August 23, Babu highlighted his experience and the lessons he has learned along the way.

Stating that he is prepared to keep the government in check if Raila transitions to the AUC.

Despite his differences with the current broad-based government, Babu emphasized his unwavering loyalty and respect for Raila,

praising him for his immense contributions to Kenya’s democracy.

“Raila has been my political leader, and I respect him deeply,” Babu shared.

“I have worked under him, for him, and with him. He is still my leader.

Raila has tried his best for this nation, fighting for our country regardless of what people might say. We cannot ignore the impact he has had on Kenya.”

As Raila’s potential departure from active party politics looms,

Babu has boldly declared himself ready to take over as the opposition leader.

He dismissed concerns about his age and experience,

arguing that true experience comes from overcoming challenges, not just from the passage of time.

“Experience does not come with age; it comes with the challenges you have faced,” Babu explained.

“I may be 35 years old, but I have encountered and solved numerous challenges. Others may have lived longer, but they have not faced as many trials.”

With Odinga and ODM warming up to President Ruto’s government, Babu has taken a stand, choosing to align himself with Kenyans who oppose the current regime.

“My decision is to stand with the people,” Babu declared.

“I will not support this defunct government, no matter the consequences.”

Babu also reiterated his commitment to holding the government accountable, vowing to continue playing the role of the opposition.

He stressed the importance of checks and balances,

citing the principles laid out by Montesquieu in the 17th century, and affirmed his dedication to fighting for a better Kenya.

“I will continue to keep checks on this government

Ensuring that the voices of the people are heard and that we find lasting solutions to the issues plaguing our country today,” Babu concluded.
