Baby dies after mother ‘accidentally’ places her in oven instead of crib – police

A mother has been arrested after she allegedly placed her baby inside the oven instead of her crib, killing her in the process – in Kansas City, United States.

Police say that Mariah Thomas, 26, intended to place her one-month-old daughter in her crib for a nap when she accidentally placed her inside the oven.

The mother, Mariah, who could now face between 10 years and life in prison if found guilty, has since been charged with first-degree endangering the welfare of a child resulting in death.

According to Mariah’s charge sheet, police were dispatched to a house on Forest Avenue at about 1:30 pm after receiving a 911 call of a baby who was not breathing.

Upon arriving at the scene, they found the caller (Mariah) holding the baby. The infant had visible burn wounds on the body.

The Kansas City Fire Department, who also responded to the scene, pronounced the baby dead.

“We acknowledge the gruesome nature of this tragedy, and our hearts are weighted by the loss of this precious life,” Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker said as reported by Fox News.

“We trust the criminal justice system to respond appropriately to these awful circumstances.”

Investigations into the matter are still ongoing.
