Baringo Senator William Cheptumo has died at the age of 57 years, Senate Speaker Amason Kingi has confirmed.
In a statement on Sunday February 16, 2025, Kingi indicated that the Baringo senator had been hospitalised in Nairobi before his demise.
Cheptumo passed away on Sunday morning while receiving treatment.
Meanwhile, President William Ruto was among the leaders who mourned Cheptumo as a progressive leader who was dedicated to public service.
“Senator William Cheptumo was a progressive leader who was dedicated to public service. He was vocal, hardworking, and a tireless champion for the transformation of Baringo,” President Ruto noted in a statement posted on X.
“The Cheptumo family, friends, and the people of Baringo County are in our thoughts and prayers. Rest In Peace, Mheshimiwa,” he added.
Before his election as Baringo Senator in the 2022 general elections, Cheptumo served as Baringo North Member of Parliament for 14 years (2008 to 2022).
During his tenure in the National Assembly he served as an Assistant Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs; Chairman of the Committee on Delegated Legislation; and later as Chairman of the Departmental Committee on Justice and Legal Affairs.
“On behalf of the National Assembly, the Parliamentary Service Commission and on my own behalf, I wish to extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of our departed Brother, the people of Baringo County and indeed the nation at large for the loss of Sen. Cheptumo,” stated National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula.
