The picturesque Barngetuny Hills hosted the 4th edition of the Barngetuny Mountain Run, where athletes from across Kenya competed in a grueling race for a share of the KSh. 7 million prize pool. Alfred Cheruiyot and Janet Chepng’etich emerged as the champions in the men’s and women’s categories, each earning KSh. 500,000.
Empowering Youth Through Sports
Head of Public Service Felix Koskei, the event’s Chief Guest, commended organizers and participants for utilizing sports as a platform for empowerment and community transformation. He emphasized the vital role of sports in nurturing talent and fostering economic opportunities for Kenyan youth.
“Sports is a powerful tool for shaping the future of our youth. Deliberate investment in talent development not only promotes individual growth but also uplifts communities and contributes to national development,” remarked Koskei.
Government Support for Sports Development
Principal Secretary for Sports Eng. Peter Tum reiterated the Ministry of Sports’ commitment to supporting initiatives that empower young people to monetize their talents. Tum highlighted the demanding mountain run as a testament to the value of intentional investments in sports development.
“This event underscores the power of providing platforms that nurture talent and create economic opportunities. We are dedicated to realizing H.E. President William Ruto’s vision for sports within the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda,” he stated.
A Celebration of Athletic Excellence
With over KSh. 7 million in prizes distributed across various categories, the Barngetuny Mountain Run showcased Kenya’s athletic prowess, resilience, and the potential for sports to foster community development, unity, and economic growth.
The event, patroned by Tindiret MP Julius Melly, brought together national and local leaders, including Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot, Tourism Principal Secretary John Ololtuaa, Education PS Belio Kipsang, Athletics Kenya President Jackson Tuwei, and several county officials.
